Independent filmmaking is a journey into the unknown, and I couldn’t be more excited to pull back the curtain on our next feature film project currently in early development: Sleeping Cyborg.
Why This Project? Why Now?
Not long ago, I was considering what movie should be LightMinded Art’s first full length feature. Part of that had to do with budgets, timing, and packaging. Rather than waiting on all the stars to line up and hand us a check for a script, I decided to produce one on spec. Since I want to actually produce at least one movie per year, I needed something fast.
As I got thinking about the market, I noticed that a lot of authors were having success with fairy tale re-tellings. This was further emphasized by Warner Bros slating the popular YA fairy-tale relling of Cyber by Marissa Meyer’s, schedule for wide release in November of 2028.
If you’ve followed me here at LightMinded Arts for any amount of time, you’ll know that I’ve never delved into that genre, though my “One For The Money, Two For The Soul” book could easily be classified as YA or Adult fiction. So while I didn’t feel like this was a genre I wanted to write a book in, it did interest me from a movie perspective.
So to capitalize on the hype, we are leaning hard into this high-concept, high-contrast industrial cyberpunk world. Blending the classic, timeless stakes of Sleeping Beauty with gritty, practical cyberpunk world-building, the story follows a pragmatic salvage mechanic who infiltrates a sealed subterranean bunker to free a cybernetically enhanced woman from stasis—only to discover her mind is being illegally weaponized as a living CPU to control the city.
By positioning Sleeping Cyborg as a lean, micro-budget independent feature, we are designing a film built to capture the surging audience demand for dark sci-fi fairy-tale reimaginings. (Obviously, since we do clean fiction, we’ll keep it in the PG to PG-13 realm)
